I just found out through the Christianity Today Web site that my first book, It Takes a Church to Raise a Christian: How the Community of God Transforms Lives was given an Award of Merit in the Christianity Today Book Awards.
Out of 300 books nominated, five books were selected by the editors as the finalists in each category. Then the winners were selected. In my category, there was a tie between Christ, Baptism and the Lord's Supper: Recovering the Sacraments for Evangelical Worship, by Leonard J. Vander Zee and Reviewing Leadership, by Robert J. Banks & Bernice M. Ledbetter.
It Takes a Church was, in essence, first runner-up. And for that I am incredibly honored. All the more so when I realize that my book was placed behind one written by Rob Banks.
And what a good and well-deserved recognition this is for Rob. Not only did he and Bernice (an old friend) get chosen for the top book, but he was my doctoral mentor on the dissertation that became It Takes a Church. No surprise to me that the student is still learning from the teacher.
Congratulations, Rob. Your impact on the church and ministry around the world only grows with each day.
